Have you ever considered why our vehicles have large windscreens but small rear view mirrors? Yet many people tend to focus on the small mirrors instead, to their own detriment. The purpose of the front windscreen is to have wide focus on the road in front of you and assists you to direct your vehicle forward to reach your destination. While you definitely need the majority of your focus out the front windscreen looking at the road ahead, every now and then you also need to take a look into the rear view mirror to see what’s behind you. With focus on what’s behind us. I have even heard someone commenting that we don’t need review mirrors. This however is impossible as you need to judge successes and even failures from previous experiences.
So now we have entered into 2019, with many new year’s resolutions and aims for the new year. Some have decided to hit the gym; others have decided to further their studies or aim to take up a hobby or break an old habit, etc. But before long, these resolutions become something of the past as any form of failure seems to deter people. Although it is important to be obsessed with your goals, it is just as important to also stop and reflect on what was seen as learning areas and celebration of achievements, not get stuck in the past. Due to the fear of failure, many people procrastinate. So many people have been so focused on the future and what’s ahead of them that they totally forget to look back at their achievements and celebrate those.
Unfortunately, we live in a quick fix society, and if something does not meet our expectations, we either replace or dump it. Social media teaches us that success can be bought in a pill, a potion, a bottle or even a lotion. It is all too easy to become obsessed with soaring faster, higher and stronger that we forget to celebrate our successes and achievements along the way.
When travelling and a stone chips or even cracks our windshield, we do not replace the vehicle. We continue driving to reach a safe destination. Then why is that when life “cracks our windshield” do we park our vehicles and aim never to drive it again?
Questions to ask yourself in 2019:
It is important to slow down and really think about these questions because the looking in the rear view mirror activity provides you with real feedback on your achievements and helps you to reassess.
Just keep in mind, it is not how you start in life, it is how you end that makes the difference.
So, my wish to you for 2019 is all the success and happiness in the world and a clear vision to reach your set goals. Look at your past and learn from it, but don’t let it hinder your future success. You alone can determine your destiny and I know you can do it.
May this year bring you success, peace, joy and fulfilment.
